ABOUT THE PROJECT

Ensuring Reliable EV App-to-Vehicle Connectivity

Nrg About

The client’s companion mobile app played a critical role in controlling, monitoring, and securing their electric scooters. As the product was already in production, the objective was to validate real-world behavior rather than theoretical functionality. Our engagement focused on assessing functional accuracy, device compatibility, vehicle interoperability, and the overall user experience. In parallel, we benchmarked the app against competitor vehicles to provide actionable insights into feature parity, usability gaps, and monetization opportunities, helping the client refine both current and future product roadmaps.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Inconsistent Real-World EV App Performance

Data Integrity Problem
Despite being production-ready, the companion app exhibited inconsistent behavior when paired with vehicles across devices, OS versions, and usage conditions. Interoperability issues, delayed responses, unclear UI touchpoints, and varying user journeys impacted user trust and feature adoption. Additionally, the client lacked clear benchmarks to understand how their app compared against direct competitors. Traditional bug reports were insufficient for communicating real-world reliability concerns to stakeholders, prompting the need for a comprehensive, user-centric evaluation approach.

What we did?

Vehicle App Interoperability
Multi-Device Compatibility
User Journey Optimization
Competitive Experience Benchmarking

Vehicle App Interoperability

We tested the companion app by actively pairing it with electric scooters and executing real-life scenarios such as geo-fence breaches, speed-limit violations, fall detection, vehicle movement while parked, and SOS triggers. Each feature was evaluated not only for correctness but also for consistency and reliability across repeated executions. Intermittent issues were tracked separately to reflect real-world instability that traditional functional testing often misses.

Multi-Device Compatibility

Testing was carried out on real devices covering five generations of Android (8–15) and iOS (14–18). This ensured compatibility with older devices still widely used by customers. Device-specific behaviors, OS-level permission handling, Bluetooth stability, and background app behavior were closely observed and documented to help the client maintain broad market accessibility.

User Journey Optimization

We mapped complete user journeys for key actions such as first-time pairing, auto-reconnect, security alerts, and feature discovery. Each journey was measured by the number of steps, clarity of actions, and time taken to achieve the goal. UI touchpoints were audited for visibility and ease of access, while real users were asked to perform scenario-based tasks to validate discoverability and intuitiveness.

Competitive Experience Benchmarking

Real EV users were interviewed to uncover long-term pain points and validate proposed improvements. In parallel, competitor vehicles and apps were evaluated using the same criteria to establish benchmarks. This enabled a SWOT-style analysis highlighting where the client excelled, where they lagged, and which features held the highest perceived value, directly supporting future improvement plans and feature monetization strategies.
