PROBLEM STATEMENT

Challenges in Accessibility for Digital Learning

Higher Education Problem
With over 100,000 eBook pages to test, ensuring accessibility for individuals with disabilities was critical. As digital learning expands globally, content must comply with standards like WCAG, ADA, and Section 508. People with disabilities rely on assistive technologies to access materials, but gaps in design, structure, and content create barriers. Our task was to assess, identify, and resolve these issues, ensuring education materials were accessible, inclusive, and compliant with regulations.

What we did?

Evaluated Content with Assistive Technology
Verified Designs Using Color Contrast Tools
Assessed Content Structure for Accessibility
Conducted Accessibility Usability Testing

Evaluated Content with Assistive Technology

We used JAWS and NVDA to assess how accessible content was for users with visual impairments. This evaluation included testing interactive elements, tables, and lists for proper screen reader functionality. The insights were logged in detailed reports for developers. We also identified areas where dynamic content failed to interact seamlessly with screen readers.

Verified Designs Using Color Contrast Tools

Colour contrast plays a crucial role in readability. Using tools like Color Contrast Analyzer and Arc Toolkit, we verified that all text and graphical elements met WCAG compliance. Our testing ensured visual elements were accessible for users with colour blindness or low vision. Additional checks were conducted to ensure interactive graphics adhered to visual accessibility guidelines.

Assessed Content Structure for Accessibility

We reviewed the structure of the content, ensuring a logical flow and proper use of headings, lists, and links. This included thoroughly checking for dynamic content updates and meticulously validating compliance against accessibility standards like WCAG 2.1 and ADA guidelines. Our team ensured the semantic structure of the content fully supported effective keyboard navigation for all users.

Conducted Accessibility Usability Testing

Beyond compliance, we assessed usability by focusing on real-world user interactions. Leveraging a subset of usability testing principles and tools, we evaluated navigation, functionality, and responsiveness to ensure seamless and accessible user experiences. Additionally, we gathered valuable user feedback to enhance intuitive interaction for individuals relying on assistive technologies.
